Eat Your Breakfast!
There are myriads of diets to lose weight, but recent studies have shown that just eating your breakfast is an important factor in controlling your weight and warding off disease. Eating a hearty breakfast can lower your risk of heart disease, diabetes and obesity.
Studies are now showing that men who skip breakfast increase risk of heart attack or death from heart disease by 27%. Scientists think that “skipping breakfast may make you hungrier and more likely to eat larger meals, which leads to a surge in blood sugar.” In turn that can lay the foundation for diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels.
Both a good morning meal and being careful what you eat sets your blood-sugar pattern for the rest of the day. The old adage “Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper” is still valid today. If you eat more calories in the morning you can burn them off during the day. A large meal at the end of the day is going to add up the calories as fat because you can’t burn them all off before going to bed. Also, late night eating often involves sweet foods that can boost your blood sugar right before going to bed. It can also lower levels of melatonin, a hormone that helps you relax at bedtime, making it harder to sleep.
Also, people who walk a lot, like many Europeans, don’t have as much obesity. Combining exercise with lighter meals can work to reduce weight gain.
“It is the custom and order of society to take a slight breakfast. But this is not the best way to treat the stomach. At breakfast time the stomach is in a better condition to take care of more food than at the second or third meal of the day. The habit of eating a sparing breakfast and a large dinner is wrong. Make your breakfast correspond more nearly to the heartiest meal of the day.” Counsels on Diet and Foods, page 173
