Praying for Your Children

Adapted from a blog from Darlene Schacht

A few weeks ago a post regarding the need to pray for the purity of our children was written.  In that post we talked about the warped values and corrupt definition of beauty that the media is feeding to young and maturing girls. It goes without saying that this message can also affect the way that boys view the women around them.

At the end of that post readers we were invited to join together in praying for mothers and fathers everywhere so that we would step up to our God-given responsibility of nurturing our children the way God designed them to be.

Since that time, a list of 31 ways have been put together that we can pray for our children along with scripture verses to guide us in truth. That’s one for every day of the month!

Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath. ~ James 1:19

2. While your children are growing, pray often for their salvation, as the prophet Isaiah wrote,

Drop down, ye heavens, from above, and let the skies pour down righteousness: let the earth open, and let them bring forth salvation, and let righteousness spring up together; I the LORD have created it. ~ Isaiah 45:8

3. Give children age appropriate responsibilities, praying that they will learn the value of stewardship. Teach them to appreciate all that we have as a gift from the Lord.

In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine [shewing] uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, 8 Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you. ~ Titus 2:7,8

11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high [places]. ~ Ephesians 6:11&12

5. Pray that God will help your child to speak wisely and bridle her tongue that it might be used effectively.

29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. ~ Ephesians 4:29,30

6. Pray that your child will see the value and importance of modesty. That they may represent themselves as holy and acceptable servants of the Lord.

3 Whose adorning let it not be that outward [adorning] of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;

4 But [let it be] the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, [even the ornament] of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.~ 1 Peter 3:3-4

7. Pray that you guide your children toward a recognition of their value in the eyes of God. Not an attitude that is driven by pride, but by who is in Jesus Christ.

Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, [and] to keep himself unspotted from the world.~ James 1:27

15. Pray for ways that you might communicate Biblical principles to your child. And that your child will accept the Word of God as applicable for today.

Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. ~ 2 Peter 1:20-21

16. Pray that the time you share with your children will be of great value. That they might learn spiritual and life lessons from you.
